The right to protest

Letter May 01, 2014
It was truly really heart-rending for all of us to see that lady police officers inhumanly hurt Amina Masood Janjua

KARACHI: It was a shame to hear that the Islamabad Police have inhumanly and offensively tortured and beaten the peaceful protesters who were just using their democratic right to raise their voices for their loved ones who have gone missing.

These protestors were, of course, in pain, as they had no information of the whereabouts of their family members and were using the demonstration as a means to vent out their sadness. But, unfortunately, police officers attacked them with tear gas, launched baton charge at them, dragged and manhandled them shamelessly.

It was truly really heart-rending for all of us to see that lady police officers had inhumanly hurt Amina Masood Janjua, the founder of Defence of Human Rights and Public Service Trust. What should these people do? Specially when the country and it’s leadership has failed to address their issues? Should they also stop protesting? Such inhumanity on part of the police and the interior ministry is quite intolerable and should be condemned widely.
