KARACHI: “For there to be change, we need to change” by Ahmer Ashraf (October 29) was a good article. Though there must be reform of the education system, I think the products of elite schools and foreign universities have a far greater responsibility than those who do not. One can show sympathy for people who don’t know better but what about those who do know better but don’t do anything about it?
As for the mainstream system of schooling, who is going to purge it of the nationalistic and religious brainwashing that schoolchildren are given through the curriculum and prescribed textbooks? This comes at the expense of topics which would inculcate tolerance and civic sense in pupils. Personally, I feel ashamed that quite a few of our current crop of political leaders have studied in missionary schools. Perhaps the Catholic Board and other Christian school bodies need to reassess the moral lessons taught within their walls.
