Fighting cyber crimes

Letter April 19, 2014
I would strongly urge government to treat this issue with priority, bring existing laws in line with reality.

KARACHI: Millions of people around the world use computers and the internet everyday. We all use it in school, at work, at home, or even while travelling (thanks to smartphones and laptop). This has clearly made our lives easier. But while there have been numerous benefits there are also some hidden problems, not least of all cyber-related crimes.

Computers today are being increasingly used for activities like e-mail espionage, credit card fraud, spamming, software piracy and so on. And then there are issues like online bullying and harassment, cyber-stalking and hacking.

Real-life society has the police and laws to regulate people’s actions, but unfortunately in Pakistan, our laws have yet to catch up with the internet and the virtual world. I would strongly urge the government to treat this issue with priority and bring our existing laws in line with the reality of an increasingly computerised and virtual world.
