Lack of water resource planning

Letter April 09, 2014
In Karachi, there is not a single area where water shortage does not challenge citizens.

KARACHI: Through you newspaper, I would like to urge the authorities concerned to take action on the water shortage in Karachi.

Water shortage has been a major problem in Pakistan for many years. Rainwater is hardly utilised effectively. Every year, almost a billion gallons of water are wasted in the absence of proper water storage facilities. The result is an acute shortage of water, the consequences of which the people of Pakistan have to bear on a daily basis.

In Karachi, there is not a single area where water shortage does not challenge citizens. Every year, Punjab and Sindh face a cataclysm: precious water is wasted owing to lack of planning. Dams and barrages should be built in order to store water. One fails to understand why none of the political leaderships so far have taken this matter seriously.

Moreover, one shouldn’t forget that Pakistan is an agricultural country whose existence is pretty much based on agriculture. If no proper action is taken, the consequences would be disasterous.
