Credibility of electoral process

Letter April 08, 2014
Given these factors, can we still believe in the complete credibility of the Afghan elections?

JAFFARABAD: The year 2014 is turning out to be a very important one for Afghanistan. This year has so far seen the holding of the presidential elections and by the end of it, we will also see the withdrawal of foreign troops.

It is good to see that the presidential elections have gone smoothly. It must be noted that more than 50 per cent of registered voters participated in this election process, proving it to be the fairest elections in Afghanistan’s history. However, there are many things which need to be discussed. Firstly, many foreign monitoring agencies were not allowed to monitor the electoral process. Secondly, a major chunk of Afghan refugees were not registered to vote despite the fact that they have suffered the most due to the situation in Afghanistan. Given these factors, can we still believe in the complete credibility of the Afghan elections?
