Welcome legislation

Letter March 28, 2014
At present, damage being caused to environment in Sindh, particularly in urban areas, has reached horrific proportion.

KARACHI: I would like to draw attention towards the recent initiative taken by the Sindh Assembly in passing bills on healthcare and environment protection, respectively. This is a very positive step, which I hope will pave the path to more stringent environmental control, the need for which grows more urgent with the passage of time. At present, the damage being caused to the environment in Sindh, particularly in the urban areas, has reached a horrific proportion.

In addition, it needs to be ensured that these bills do not suffer the same fate, which previous bills from the Sindh Assembly suffered as they were relegated to the dustbin of history. At present, Karachi releases 87 per cent of its raw sewage into the sea, without any treatment. And that is just the tip of the iceberg. Hopefully, with the promulgation of this bill, things will change. Therefore, the implementation of the clauses in this bill, which include the formation of the Sindh Environment Protection Agency, should be undertaken on a priority basis.
