How NGOs can transform an area

Letter March 26, 2014
After arrival of multinational firm and mushroom growth of NGOs, there has been behavioral change, social development.

DADU: Recently, a multinational oil and gas exploration company and Sujag Sansar Organisation, a social awareness body, jointly arranged a week-long cricket tournament for the local youth in taluka Johi, in district Dadu. I got the opportunity to watch the final match and hear the impressive speech of the community notables. This area is in desperate need for such activities.

Having been born and brought up in this area, I have observed bad blood and even bloodshed due to the inter-caste enmities here. But after the arrival of the multinational company and the mushrooming growth of NGOs, there has been a behavioral change and social development. A lot of transformation has been witnessed.

The most rewarding activities of the multinational company’s community development work through its partner local NGOs are providing hundreds of children, particularly girls, quality education and basic health services. These initiatives would bear fruit very soon when an educated and a relatively healthy new generation would take up the family leadership in the area with relatively enlightened thinking. More such initiatives need to be taken by the corporate sector and NGOs to alleviate the conditions of the people.
