Squandering taxpayers’ money

Letter March 14, 2014
If we browse SBP’s website, we can see many positions, which were advertised 7 to 11 months ago, still require action.

KARACHI: Pakistan’s central bank is one of the major institutions of the country but it really saddens me to see how the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) is squandering public money on advertisements without meeting the desired objectives. There are many advertisements published by the SBP in the national media. I work as an HR manager at a multinational company and know how advertisements are issued, what their cost is and how the funds spent on them are lost if the objectives of the adverts are not achieved in two or three months.

It deeply saddens me when I browse the SBP website and look at the status of recruitment at the organisation. If we browse the SBP’s website, we can see that many positions, which were advertised seven to 11 months ago, still require action at the end of the SBP human recourse office, as is evident from its website. It cannot be justified that a position at the SBP advertised in May 2013 is not only still vacant but its status still mentions that the “interviews will be conducted shortly”.

As a senior manager, I am sure that these advertisements cost millions of rupees and in the case of the SBP, this is all public money collected from taxpayers. Can our central bank justify the delay in the materialisation of these advertisements on which millions and maybe billions of rupees have been spent? And could the SBP also please tell the nation how much money has been spent on advertisements, which did not give any return? The whole nation looks forward to hearing from the spokesperson for the SBP on how he/she justifies the use of this public money.
