What we need is an improvement in methods of production, concentration on exports that can compete internationally.
AMANZIMTOTI, SOUTH AFRICA: This is with reference to M Ziauddin’s article of March 13 “Warehouse economy” (March 13). The article made for an interesting read and painted a true picture of the Pakistani economy. However, the writer’s suggestions to improve the economy seem naive. One of the most famous Chinese maxims states that “It doesn’t matter whether a cat is white or black, as long as it catches the mice.”
In other words, China did not really worry too much about whether its policy was capitalist or socialist as long as it improved its economy. The outcome is there for the world to see. What we need is an improvement in methods of production and a concentration on exports that can compete internationally. Banking on importing luxury items will get us nowhere.
