Praying for a son

Letter March 10, 2014
Many people, who look up to Shahid Afridi, will be encouraged to think that having a son is quintessential.

KARACHI: This is in reference to the news item titled “Pakistan fans pray for a son” (March 7), which gave details about the status update of Meri Jaan Pakistan’s Facebook page. Although I agree entirely when people say that a family is only complete when a couple has both a son and a daughter; at the same time, I do not think the people of our country are ready for a statement like the one given above. This is because many people, who look up to Shahid Afridi, will be encouraged to think that having a son is quintessential. Some people may even feel that it is justified not to want a daughter.

I think people, especially media persons, should understand the repercussions of what they say or write as it has a very vast impact on the ordinary people. As far as Afridi is concerned, he has four beautiful daughters, who he has brought up very well and if he were blessed with a son, I believe he would shower the young one with the same amount of love and care that he has showered on his daughters.
