Bhutto’s ouster

Letter March 06, 2014
Bhutto’s policies merely provided an opportunity for an international conspiracy to take place.

ILFORD, ESSEX, UK: This is with reference to Tariq Mahmud’s article “The Bazaar Movement of 1977” (March 5). While there is no doubt that the revenue-generating class of Pakistan, as well as the bureaucracy, which did not like being dealt with sternly, were furious with the policies of Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, his ouster from power was not caused by them.

His policies merely provided an opportunity for an international conspiracy to take place. It is quite well known that the US wanted Pakistan’s nuclear programme to be rolled back and Henry Kissinger had reportedly even threatened to ‘make an example out of Bhutto’.
