HUNZA: Over 50 per cent of the students of Gilgit-Baltistan (G-B) are studying in various cities of the country for the purpose of acquiring higher education. There is only one functional university in G-B and the area still lacks essential educational facilities, especially for higher education. Financially vulnerable parents are in no position to pay the huge amount of fees charged by public and private colleges/universities in other cities. However, G-B students have no choice but to travel to distant cities because of a lack of higher education facilities. In 2009, the then prime minister had announced the establishment of a medical college in the area but no progress has been made on that front. The education department of G-B needs to initiate bold steps towards the establishment of medical and engineering schools, as well as coordinate with the federal government to improve the education sector
