Problems in the legal system

Letter February 24, 2014
Rigid rules and procedures should be done away with, among other things.

ISLAMABAD: The fight for justice is a Herculean task in Pakistan. While both men and women are affected, in any given situation, women, who do not have as much exposure to and experience in dealing with public institutions, are the worst sufferers. This situation has been exacerbated by the lack of good lawyers practicing in subordinate courts, which has made things even more difficult for justice seekers in the country.

Regrettably, the situation has worsened because in the absence of competent lawyers, litigants are left at the mercy of court personnel and other people attached with lawyers. In any case, in our legal system, much time and money is consumed in hiring an advocate and paying him a hefty fee. Radical reforms are clearly required to make the provision of justice easy and speedy. Rigid rules and procedures should be done away with, among other things.
