We hope the federal government and the education department will do their utmost to utilise these funds judiciously.

KARACHI: This refers to the news item published in your newspaper on February 14 carrying the headline “USAID launches Pakistan Reading Project”. Going through the details of what the project is all about, one finds that USAID has started the Pakistan Reading Project with a total investment of $160 million, for a period of five years. The aim of the project is to improve the reading ability of 3.2 million children all over Pakistan, train 94,000 primary schoolteachers and give them 6,000 scholarships. US Ambassador to Pakistan Richard Olson has stated that the basic object of this project is to provide a chance to increase the reading talents of millions of Pakistani children. The Pakistan Reading Project will start in 67 districts across the country. This programme will also allow the building or rehabilitating of, at least, 850 schools.

We hope the federal government and the education department will do their utmost to utilise these funds judiciously. Therefore, it is requested that the prime minister, the minister of state for education and the federal secretary education ensure that the funds are only utilised for the Pakistan Reading Project.
