Unjustified demand

Letter February 21, 2014
I suggest FIA’s request be turned down, serious action be taken against those responsible for giving such a suggestion

KARACHI: I was really shocked to see a news item which stated that the Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) in its working paper has suggested that more powers be given to it so that it gets the legal rights to enter into any house to prevent theft of electricity and gas. Not only this, but the FIA was also recently engaged in convincing members of the relevant Standing Committee of the Senate to accord it such permission. In return, the FIA proposed that it be allowed to keep 2.5 per cent of the recovered amount as reward.

Electricity and gas meters are installed outside of houses. Therefore, it is not difficult to detect such pilferage by using the latest technology without entering houses. I suggest that the FIA’s request be turned down and serious action be taken against those who were responsible for giving such a suggestion in writing as this was clearly only meant to harass citizens and violate their basic rights.
