Reforming attitudes

Letter February 16, 2014
Muslims can happily practise their faith living in Western countries but they must learn to live with others.

NIDDERAU, GERMANY: This is with reference to the article by Maheen A Rashdi titled “A reason to clean up our house” (February 12). I beg to differ from the stand that the writer has taken. Most of the immigrants escaping to the West are Muslims and one reason why they are attracted to Western countries is their secular nature. Secular attitudes accept freedom of practising one’s religion as long as the practice does not disturb a person’s relationship with others in an adverse manner.

If we choose one group in Canada, which least adjusts to the country’s local life, it is Muslims. They often do not make friends with non-Muslims. They even expect to carry on with their way of life and expect others to change theirs in order to accommodate them. Nobody stops Muslim women from wearing the hijab or going to mosques. Muslims can happily practise their faith living in Western countries but they must learn to live with others.
