Dismal state of education

Letter February 16, 2014
It is now crystal clear that in Sindh, the education sector is in complete shambles.

KARACHI: This is apropos the Annual Status of Education Report (ASER) 2013. According to the report, Sindh is placed at the bottom level in education indicators among the provinces of Pakistan. It is now crystal clear that in Sindh, the education sector is in complete shambles. The question arises regarding who to hold responsible for this state of affairs. I believe that all our politicians, the bureaucracy, administrators, teachers, parents, students and society at large have all contributed to this dismal state. Politicians are not willing to show their commitment towards the education sector, bureaucrats are busy leading luxurious lives, teachers only seem to care about establishing their own private tuition centres, while parents only seem to consider their duty to be to leave their children at the school gate.

Our lethargic and negligent attitudes towards our respective responsibilities are notable in this regard. It is time that all stakeholders recognise their responsibilities and fulfil them. The authorities concerned must look into this matter seriously and start programmes on an emergency basis for the restoration of educational standard in Sindh. Furthermore, it is suggested that the kind of survey done in the ASER should not only be confined to investigating primary level education, but colleges and universities should also be brought into the fold of such activities.
