PARSIPPANY, NEW JERSEY, USA: Long ago, we used to hear that doctors, engineer and other gifted professionals are leaving the country for the sake of employment and better prospects. Patriotic people used to dread the term ‘brain drain’ and some talented people sought to set a positive example by choosing to live in their country.
It was very shocking for me to hear about the shooting incident that targeted the famous Urdu playwright Asghar Nadeem Syed. At the same time, there have also been numerous incidents that saw young professionals being targeted in a similar manner. Such attacks against people who are our national assets is triggering a fresh process of brain drain that is leading to talented and bright people fleeing the country for the safety of their lives and those of their families, and not just in search of a better future in the West. This kind of brain drain is causing great damage to the country.
