Domestic child labour

Letter January 27, 2014
Since 2010, there have been, at least, 25 reported cases of death of child labourers in Pakistan.

LAHORE: The Child Rights Movement (CRM) is a coalition of more than 100 civil society organisations working for the promotion, advocacy and protection of children’s rights in Pakistan.

Since 2010, there have been, at least, 25 reported cases of death of child labourers in Pakistan. Since this was the number of deaths that was reported in the media, it is very likely that the actual number is far higher. The CRM urges the federal government to focus on this issue and ensure that domestic child labour is placed on the list of hazardous occupations under the Employment of Children Act of 1991. While a lot more has to be done before child labour is completely eliminated from a country such as Pakistan, this is the least that needs to be done, so that those who employ children as domestic servants in their homes, and treat them harshly, will be liable for prosecution under the law.
