Fear and loathing in America

Letter October 22, 2010
Even a disaster like 9/11 didn’t invite a backlash in the US as extreme as the one that took place in Gujrat.

HARYANA, INDIA: “Fear and loathing in America” by AA Sheikh (October 20) is a well-written article. Great nations have to set high standards for themselves. The US is scrutinised under a microscope every time a right-winger says something odd. Even a disaster like 9/11 didn’t invite a backlash as extreme as the one that took place in Gujrat. On the other hand, the subcontinent is comfortable with so many oddities of life which are otherwise intolerable. Religious intolerance is a hallmark of our society. In spite of how everything has changed in recent years, the US remains more religiously tolerant than the subcontinent.
