Wedded to the past

Letter October 22, 2010
The only way to remove the prejudices and mistrust on both sides is through people-to-people contact and trade.

DUBAI: This is with reference to Ayesha Tammy Haq’s article “Wedded to the past” (October 22). After many years of knowing Pakistanis, I believe the only way to remove the prejudices and mistrust on both sides is through people-to-people contact and trade. Imagine the resources that would be freed to help our populations rise above the poverty line. India needs to be more welcoming. It is going to be a challenging task especially since, just yesterday, three Jaish-e-Mohammed militants spread terror in a Srinagar suburb.

I am not asking Pakistanis to forget Kashmir but what about focusing on opening borders there? What about the possibility of the reunification of Kashmir, followed by independence? This may not happen in our lifetimes but we need to start the process now.
