Waris Shah and society (II)

Letter January 11, 2014
I am afraid the writers have gone too far by trying to make him out to be a Sufi poet.

SAN ANTONIO, TX, US: I do not believe Waris Shah can be counted amongst Sufi poets. He was an expressionist telling a love story. I am afraid the writers have gone too far by trying to make him out to be a Sufi poet.

The issues of marriage and individual choices that the writers have brought up are actually much better narrated in tales like Sassui-Punnu and Mirza-Sahiban. Here are a few poets that fall into the category of Sufi poets: Sultan Bahoo, Mian Muhammad Bukhsh and Mehr Ali.
