The whole world, particularly the Western world, is moving towards renewable sources of energy, such as solar and wind
REDMONT, WASHINGTON: This is in response to the article “Pakistan’s energy security” by Zahir Kazmi published on January 7. Why are we continuing to push for energy generating technologies which are old, risky and prone to long-term problems? Look at the US, where hardly any new nuclear energy-based power plants have been set up for many years. The plants that the writer refers to are all old plants, which were built a long time ago when dangers inherent in nuclear technology were not well understood and when alternative technologies did not exist.
The whole world, particularly the Western world, is moving towards renewable sources of energy, such as solar and wind. Why, then, are we pushing for fossilised technologies? Maybe these will sell in poor Third World countries, where people do not have much information about their dangers. The advanced world has decided to move on.
