Fighting deforestation

Letter December 30, 2013
Govt of Pakistan’s own pledge is to increase forest cover by 5.6% in the current year and to six per cent by 2015.

ISLAMABAD: Deforestation not only has a major adverse impact on agriculture sustainability in Pakistan, it can also be an important factor in climate change. For example, rapid loss of forest cover has been cited as one of the reasons for an increasing number of droughts and of rapid melting of glaciers.

The government of Pakistan’s own pledge is to increase forest cover by 5.6 per cent in the current year and to six per cent by 2015. However, it seems that this is not really followed in letter and in spirit because there is no change on the ground. Our government needs to act before it is too late.
