Low child mortality rates

Letter December 24, 2013
Child mortality rate in Bangladesh is 41 for every 1,000 children, 56 for India and a relatively high 86 for Pakistan.

ISLAMABAD: Children who deserve our utmost attention are often victims of neglect, particularly in the underdeveloped world. The situation in the rural areas of Pakistan is especially bad. Poverty, lack of education and lack of awareness among parents are among the significant contributing factors. Diseases that could be cured, if properly dealt with, are causing deaths among children from such backgrounds.

The difference in child mortality rates between Pakistan and its neighbours is glaring. The child mortality rate in Bangladesh is 41 for every 1,000 children, 56 for India and a relatively high 86 for Pakistan. While the rest of the world is taking strong measures to overcome the menace of child mortality, in Pakistan, there hasn’t been much progress in recent years.

A dedicated efforts needs to be made by the government, non-governmental organisations and philanthropic organisations to eradicate poverty from Pakistan.
