Traffic chaos in Lahore

Letter December 21, 2013
At this junction, traffic converges from six directions and clogs up because of a lack of effective policing.

LAHORE: Thokar Niazbeg and a stretch of about three kilometres ahead of it on the Multan Road presents the worst traffic disorder and congestion these days. Although a flyover that has now been built there has helped to ease the traffic flow, under it are several criss-crossing roads and the scene is a complete traffic mess.

At this junction, traffic converges from six directions and clogs up because of a lack of effective policing. On top of it, about 100 metres of the Raiwind Road near the crossing has been under gutter water for the past many weeks. Vehicles passing through it splash the dirty water onto passers-by. It seems that the Khadim-e-Ala of Punjab hasn’t passed by this location since the last election or it wouldn’t be in the mess that it is in.

All types of transport ranging from Qingchi rickshaws to 40-foot-long heavy vehicles pass by here while a few uninterested wardens stand by looking helpless. Moreover, the opening of a new bus stand opposite the National Highway building on the Multan Road is another major source of traffic congestion. I would humbly request that the Khadim-e-Ala please take notice of this.
