Media and religiosity (II)

Letter October 19, 2010
‘Hypocritistan’: where we talk about Islam (a particular kind) and impose religious dogma and social mores on society.

KARACHI: General Zia was one of the worst things to happen to this country as was the Afghan war. There were Muslims before 1977 in Pakistan, there were also cabarets, bars, night-clubs, vibrant coffee houses, communists, Marxists, socialists etc, basically all that was culturally rich and diverse, all that was tolerant of the differences amongst different people. Now though, welcome to ‘hypocritistan’, we will talk about Islam (a particular kind) and impose our own congealed mass of religious dogma and social mores on the rest of society. This is, unfortunately, the sad truth about our country.
