IP gas pipeline

Letter December 19, 2013
The government must resist US pressure and do what is in the national interest.

LAHORE: A good decision has been taken by Federal Minister for Petroleum and Natural Resources Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Iranian Minister of Petroleum Bijan Namdar Zangeneh to expedite the much-needed Iran-Pakistan gas pipeline, which was on hold for some time. The Iranian part has already been completed and now it is Pakistan’s turn to construct the pipeline in its territory.

While the US may be opposing the pipeline and threatening possible sanctions on Iran’s nuclear programme, it remains mandatory upon both nations to complete the project. If this is done, it will create a win-win situation for both the countries since Pakistan needs more energy whereas Iran needs to strengthen its economy. The government must resist US pressure and do what is in the national interest.
