First task should be for civilian government to gain control of the security and foreign policies from establishment.
SALEM, NJ, USA: This is in response to Khalid Saleem’s article “Why ‘revisit’ Pakistan-US ties?” published on December 17. The day Pakistan has something positive to offer its neighbours and the global community, relations with all countries will start improving. The negative agenda set by the country’s rulers since independence has cost the country dearly.
The first task should be for the civilian government to gain control of the security and foreign policies from the establishment, considering the miserable performance on both fronts for decades. That will set standards for accountability that have been starkly absent. Secondly, disarm and rehabilitate those who have chosen the path of violence, preferably through talks. There are no other options and procrastination only makes a disease incurable, if not prohibitively costly to treat.
