Responsibility of the CJ

Letter December 15, 2013
It is not chief justice’s job to direct or run the affairs of state institutions or to intervene in their functioning.

LAHORE: In my view, the primary responsibility of the Chief Justice of Pakistan is to ensure the dispensation of justice at the grassroots level and to improve the working performance of the lower judiciary.

Unfortunately, former chief justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhry had a very long tenure but it has to be said that he was unable to bring about much reform at the district court level. It is not the chief justice’s job to direct or run the affairs of state institutions and elected governments or to intervene in their functioning.
