Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry's tenure will be seen as a welcome beginning towards the realisation of that goal.
KARACHI: The retirement of chief justice Iftikhar Mohammad Chaudhry has created a situation with sections of society now trying to blame him for diminishing the stature of the Supreme Court while he was in office. What I fail to understand is that how can the former chief justice alone be criticised for judgments that benches which consisted of several judges made. I would say that there were many memorable moments in the former chief justice’s tenure, in particular when he decided to stand up to military dictator General (retd) Pervez Musharraf in 2007. Of course, this is not to say that the whole justice system now stands reformed and cleansed but, at least, his tenure will be seen as a welcome beginning towards the realisation of that goal.
Furthermore, it should be remembered that everyone, even the Chief Justice of Pakistan, is fallible and can make mistakes. Hence, it is an indication of malice that comments are now being made that he committed some errors deliberately or took sides.
