Waqar should have been given this honour a long time ago.
KARACHI: This is with reference to the story “Waqar Younis enters ICC Hall of Fame” (December 9). With the induction of former Pakistani fast-bowling great Waqar Younis to the International Cricket Council’s Hall of Fame, the number of Pakistanis in this prestigious list has swelled to five. Waqar joins the likes of Hanif Muhammad, Imran Khan, Javed Miandad and Wasim Alkram in the Hall of Fame.
To say that this honour was well-deserved and quite delayed is an understatement. Waqar should have been given this honour a long time ago. With 350-plus wickets in Test cricket and 400-plus wickets in One-Day Internationals, and the impact that he had upon the cricketing world in the 1990s with his reverse swing deliveries, his inclusion in the greats of the game should have always been a forgone conclusion. It is great to see him join this pantheon of great cricketers and one hopes that the likes of Inzamamul Haq and Asian Bradman Zaheer Abbas are also included in this list soon.
