ISLAMABAD: Ambulances, police and military cars are allowed to use emergency lanes when executing urgent tasks. Other drivers and pedestrians are obligated to make room for these cars as this is not only a moral obligation but also a legal one. Surveys shows that over half of private cars owners say they will not make way for these cars, while some drivers confess they have never been faced with such a situation.
Traffic congestion is a big concern in developing and populated countries and the reason behind it are narrow streets and irresponsible behaviour of people. In Singapore, the result of such a survey may be totally different as there emergency vehicles are equipped with cameras, and cars that do not make way for emergency personnel are strictly punished. Similarly, in Germany, making way for emergency vehicles is a rigid principle.
There should be a uniform way for emergency vehicles on every road and drivers who do not make way for these vehicles should be strictly punished.
