Voice of the people — reliable?

Letter October 18, 2010
The Urdu media doesn’t want to play the role that it could in bringing political awareness to our middle classes.

PESHAWAR: Khaled Ahmed’s article “How reliable is ‘voice of the people’?” (October 17) is excellent — as always. Government in countries such as ours, sometimes have to take decisions that turn out to be unpopular — and this then gives the establishment the opportunity to bring the elected government down. Further, political parties in opposition act in a very opportunistic manner and instead of realising that their own interest lies in furthering democracy, tend to act in cahoots with the establishment. This is a vicious circle we are caught up in as a nation. Unfortunately, the Urdu media is pro status quo and doesn’t want to play the role that it could in bringing political awareness to our middle classes.
