KARACHI: Pakistan won five medals in all — two gold, one silver and two bronze — at the Commonwealth Games which were recently concluded in New Delhi. Countries like Kenya and Nigeria won 32 and 35 medals respectively. If these countries can win more than 10 times as many medals as us, what is it that we are doing with regard to promotion of sports in Pakistan? In order to encourage athletes, the government and the Pakistan Sports Board should perhaps involve the corporate sector more — right now most of the funding from this source goes to cricket. Why this focus on only one sport — and one at which we are increasingly becoming bad at performing.
