We want the lights back in Karachi

Letter December 02, 2013
Some elements are trying to create a rift between the people of Karachi.

KARACHI: Once upon a time, Karachi used to be a peaceful and beautiful city. Karachiites used to live fear-free and peaceful lives. The Mazar-e-Quaid, the sands of the Arabian Sea and the old British-era architecture in and around Saddar were some of the things associated with this city. But now, what has happened to Karachi? The city of lights, the city of peace and harmony, has now turned into a city of terror and bloodshed. Karachi is now associated with bomb blasts and firings.

Some elements are trying to create a rift between the people of Karachi. They are also trying to create ethnic, cultural and religious differences among the people. In fact, things have become so grave that a day of not hearing about at least a dozen deaths a day makes one ask questions: ‘Why such a small number of casualties today?’ That is how accustomed we have become to hearing bad news about Karachi.

I urge the prime minister, the chief justices of the superior courts and the chief of army staff that they build a comprehensive plan to safeguard the city.
