City of Lights

Letter December 01, 2013
The City of Lights has turned into a city of terror and blood and mayhem.

KARACHI: Once upon a time, Karachi used to be one of the country’s most peaceful and beautiful cities. Karachiites used to live a life free of fear and the city was known for its British-era architecture and not targeted killings.

But what has happened to our Karachi now? The City of Lights has turned into a city of terror and blood and mayhem. I urge the prime minister, the chief justice of Pakistan and the chief justice of the Sindh High Court and the chief of army staff to draw up a comprehensive plan to safeguard the city and restore it to its former glory so that its residents can live a life of peace. Perhaps, the first step that they can take is to agree that from now on, the city will not be shut for any strike whatsoever. That is the bare minimum all the stakeholders — government as well as non-government — should be able to agree on.
