Should have known better

Letter November 23, 2013
The other day I met a Parachinari, who was visibly pleased at the killing of Hakimullah Mehsud.

RAWALPINDI: The other day I met a Parachinari, who was visibly pleased at the killing of Hakimullah Mehsud. On my asking him the reason for his jubilation, he said, “If you had seen the video showing how these monsters slaughtered my kith and kin and then taking their heads away to play football with them, you would have also have the same sentiments.” Then he reminded me of how they had strung the headless bodies of FC men from street poles in Matni bazaar near Peshawar and taken away their heads as trophies with them.

The Taliban attacked a police training centre in Lahore, offices of intelligence agencies all over Pakistan, jails, mosques, imambargahs, churches, commercial markets and bazaars, in the process killing thousands of innocent people. And yet we have in our midst religious party leaders who call them ‘shaheed’. Surely, they should have known better.
