Teaching English (II)

Letter November 12, 2013
The English curriculum should be designed to make it an examinable subject till the tenth grade.

LONDON: Dr Rahman’s proposals are sound, echoing the Japanese approach to learning English. Pakistan’s cultural make-up makes it possible to use English as a recreational tool, such as learning through television, language laboratories, comics, and through English language corners in libraries for all ages and abilities. The English curriculum should be designed to make it an examinable subject till the tenth grade. This would equip all those aspiring for higher education with a sound foundation.

The same approach could also be adopted to learn other languages like French, German, Russian, which in turn could serve as reservoirs for knowledge-based activities in science and technology. Knowledge could be made cost-effective and accessible to all in this manner.
