Prison reforms: a dire need

Letter November 01, 2013
It is suggested that recommendations approved by the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan, be put in practice.

ISLAMABAD: The prisons and prisoners in Pakistan have always remained utterly neglected. Prisons reforms have not been a priority of past governments. The Constitution of Pakistan contains a number of Articles that have special significance for prison administration, particularly regarding the treatment of prisoners. However, during the tenure of the past provincial government in Sindh, former provincial law minister, Muhammad Ayaz Soomro, took keen interest in reforming prisons and the state of prisoners. The current federal government also seems determined to reform the prison system.

In this connection, it is suggested that recommendations approved by the Law and Justice Commission of Pakistan, in its meetings, be put in practice and such reforms be introduced regarding the custody, reformation and rehabilitation of prisoners that will help in preventing crimes.
