50 per cent of the parents in rural areas do not send their children to school.
KHUSHAB: As a teacher, I am not satisfied with the recent education reforms. Undoubtedly, the government of Punjab has taken laudable steps to reform the old syllabus, but a regretful aspect is the replacement of Islamic lessons in the class 5 and 6 Urdu textbooks, by sports and story-based lessons. Moreover, the target of 100 per cent enrolment has not yet gained ground in rural areas because 50 per cent of the parents do not send their children to school. It will take time to fulfil the government’s demand. For this scenario, the administration should be aware of the ground realities. There must be a committee that includes education officers, teachers, textbook board officials and members of the Council of Islamic Ideology. In this way, the conundrum of education will be solved through a state-centred education policy.
