Don’t blame our culture

Letter October 13, 2010
Pakistani culture cannot be blamed for causing or encouraging harassment of women.

KARACHI: Harassment of women increases on a daily basis all over the world. I was extremely offended by the content of the news report in your newspaper "Man beats wife to death over arranged marriage” (October 4). A Pakistani woman died in Italy after her husband beat her with a brick, for opposing the arranged marriage of their daughter. The daughter, who is 20 years old, was hospitalised with serious injuries after her 19-year-old brother beat her with a stick in the courtyard of their building.

It’s appalling that rational, sane individuals can commit these sorts of barbaric acts. However, Pakistani culture cannot be blamed for causing or encouraging such horrific acts. Our culture does not condone violence and people must be made aware of this. Belief that our culture is the cause for such inhumane acts will only lead to racism and prejudice.
