Imran Khan’s stance

Letter October 21, 2013
Imran Khan’s attitude will only serve to demoralise our armed forces, who are fighting against the Taliban.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Saroop Ijaz’s article of October 20 “Honouring Martyrs”. Imran Khan should understand that our army is fighting against the Taliban for a progressive and educated Pakistan. The PTI chief seems like a confused person and is in turn also confusing and misleading the youth of our country for the sake of advancing his own political agenda. He is defending terrorists/murderers by giving strange logic, which basically states that the doings of the Taliban are in response to drone attacks in the tribal areas. The reality is that drone attacks started in 2005-06 but our country has been blighted with the menace of terrorism since long before that.

There are many segments of the Pakistani population that believe the country’s Constitution does not follow religion but these segments have not picked up arms to enforce their opinion on the rest of the population. On the other hand, the Taliban do not accept our Constitution and on top of that have succeeded in creating a state within a state. They want to enforce their ideology on the basis of their power. In his enthusiasm to appease the Taliban, it seems that Imran Khan may even be willing to handing over the entire state to them. We cannot allow this to happen; the people of the tribal areas cannot be left at the mercy of these militants.

Imran Khan’s attitude will only serve to demoralise our armed forces, who are fighting against the Taliban. It is time he saw the writing on the wall and rectified his stance on militancy.
