ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to M Ziauddin’s article of October 16 titled “It’s the economy, stupid”. It is unfortunate that liberals like the writer blame Pakistan for bad relations between India and Pakistan and advise Pakistan to improve them. They forget that it is India which, from the very beginning, started a policy of being harsh on Pakistan.
Not only did India refuse to transfer to Pakistan its rightful share of assets, it also occupied the princely states that opted to join Pakistan. India has repeatedly refused to abide by the undertaking given by it to the international community to decide the Kashmir issue with the consent of the people of the region.
There is no harm in opening trade with India, provided it agrees to settle the root causes of its conflict with Pakistan. By saying that India is right to insist on Pakistan punishing the culprits responsible for the 26/11 attacks, the writer seems to agree with the Indian claim that the state of Pakistan had a part to play in these attacks, which is not the case.
