Eidul Azha

Letter October 14, 2013
There seems to be no set mechanism to regulate the price of sacrificial animals.

ISLAMABAD: As Eid is drawing nearer, prices of sacrificial animals are rising rapidly, and I would say, not all of this has to do with demand and supply. A goat is being sold, on average, for Rs25,000 and my question is that how can anyone afford to pay that, unless he is very well off.

There seems to be no set mechanism to regulate the price of sacrificial animals. If buyers complain of high prices, they are told by sellers that it is expensive to bring the animals to the market and that on the way, various taxes and levies have to be paid to several government agencies. At the end of the day, however, it is the buyer who has to do whatever the seller asks him or else he goes home empty.
