The plight of our education sector

Letter October 11, 2013
Every aspect of our education sector needs to be reformed.

ISLAMABAD: This is with reference to Dr Akmal Hussain’s article of October 10 “Basic services for all”. There is no one in the political arena to take all the issues that the writer has so eloquently described seriously. Our national priorities are reflected in the way resources are provisioned in our budgetary allocations.

Education, which should have been accorded the highest possible priority, is regarded as the least favoured and resource-starved sector. Even the resources that are specified for this sector are suboptimally utilised. Teacher absenteeism is rampant, curricula is outdated and ideologically focused and cheating in examinations is chronic. Worst of all, often the faculty in educational institutions is deeply politicised and involved in unionism more than in teaching. Every aspect of our education sector needs to be reformed. We are precipitously moving towards an apocalypse and reversing this overwhelming thrust is urgently needed if we want to survive.
