Comparing Pakistan and India

Letter October 07, 2013
I completely disagree with the way the writer has attempted to compare India and Pakistan in this instance.

LONDON: This is with reference to Shahid Javed Burki’s article “South Asia’s policy dilemma” (October 7). I completely disagree with the way the writer has attempted to compare India and Pakistan in this instance. This is because the issues surrounding the two countries are different.

One just cannot compare the Indian economy with that of Pakistan. This is in no way to degrade Pakistan. It is true that the Indian economy currently faces policy issues and other obstacles to its growth, however, they are entirely different from those facing Pakistan. The structural differences between the two economies cannot be looked at only from the perspective of rising inflation when these two economies are so different. Economic issues cannot be looked at from such a wide spectrum.
