Abject poverty and rise in crime

Letter October 02, 2013
There is a need to fairly distribute wealth if we want to see some sort of peaceful coexistence in this society.

ISLAMABAD: There is a wide gap between the haves and have-nots in the Pakistani society and this is alarming as it affects the enjoyment of fundamental rights enshrined in the Constitution of Pakistan. A huge chunk of our citizenry lives below the poverty line while a few thousand families live in opulence. This leads to the high crime rates prevalent in most of the districts of the country. The crime situation in the upper Sindh districts is especially alarming. Kidnapping for ransom has become an industry. Many influential people mentor and harbour thugs and thieves of the region. Many rich people hardly go to their hometowns for fear of being attacked due to their enormous wealth, while the people already living there lack basic facilities for survival.

There is a need to fairly distribute wealth if we want to see some sort of peaceful coexistence in this society. Above all, there is a dire need to launch a merciless operation against thieves, thugs, robbers and bandits and their mentors. It is also reported that hardened criminals and target killers, who have fled from Karachi and are hiding in various districts in the upper and lower regions of the province, will create a serious law and order problem, if they are not arrested.
