Violence against women

Letter September 29, 2013
Our adults face an increasing backlog of suppressed sexual desires which finds a vent in the wrong direction.

KARACHI: The main factor behind the increase in rape and other cases of violence against women and underage girls is the wrong internet policy in our country. There is a ban on YouTube so no one can access any site that contains adult content. On the other hand, our society gives very few opportunities for boys and girls to mix. The average marriage age is increasing because of high unemployment and the increasing cost of marriage.

Our adults face an increasing backlog of suppressed sexual desires which eventually finds a vent in the wrong direction. This becomes a reason also because we don’t have enough sports facilities for young boys and almost none for adult women. Adding insult to injury, the sensationalism on media and other publicity outlets is inviting and inducing in terms of content. So, where will the emotions of the young let loose? What we are experiencing is an alarm. We have to pay heed to it. Let the adults decide for themselves what they want to watch and what they prefer to restrict. Let them enjoy the minuscule emotional outlet the internet is offering. Otherwise we will raise a generation of frustrated and psychologically deranged men and women.
