KARACHI: It is an open secret that putting excellent pro-women legislations on paper has remained a custom in Pakistan and little effort, in the past, has been made to implement these legislations. But the passing of the Witness Protection Bill by the Sindh Assembly, unanimously, is a laudable step towards implementation. By providing witnesses’ protection and allowing them to conceal their identities, the witnesses now can provide evidence in criminal proceedings. It goes without saying that framing such laws and their implementation is only the first step to curb anti-women practices. The challenge is considerable but the first step has been taken. It is hoped that other provinces will also pass such legislations as this is clearly the need of the hour.
